Kristin Powers and Ryan Sanderson's Wedding Website
One summer day in August of 2010, we met on the campus of Columbia University in Manhattan. We had both just finished our undergraduate degrees, Ryan at Michigan, and Kristin at Penn State, and found ourselves at orientation in the same tour group. As our loved ones will testify, we were clueless; two young people recently decided on a career in medicine, about to set out down a long and winding road. Conversation flowed easily and Ryan was quickly enamored by Kristin’s stories about her big Greek family. Naturally, we found time to sit with each other in the library to study and take lunch and dinner breaks together. After a couple of months as “just friends” Ryan finally worked up the courage to ask Kristin on a date, and it was then that we realized we were slowly falling in love. We spent 2 years together then, studying to get into medical school while enjoying being young in New York. Ultimately we ended up at different medical schools, Kristin at Georgetown and Ryan at Ohio State. Struggling to stay afloat in medical school, miles apart, we decided to end our relationship. “If we are meant to be together, we will find our way back.” That was something we told each other when we split apart. So began the “Dark Years”... but we won’t get into that here. Seven years later, Kristin was in her last year of residency at the University of Chicago Hospital and was riding an elevator up to the 7th floor about to head to the operating room. The elevator stopped on floor 5, the doors opened, and our eyes met. In popped Ryan, who had just got a job as a cardiology fellow. Hearts were pounding, palms were sweaty, and we managed to say a few words in shock and disbelief. Those in the elevator were lucky enough to witness the most uncomfortable conversation of all time. A week or so later, Ryan emailed and we made plans to meet for a coffee, and very soon after we realized we never stopped loving each other and wanted to spend our lives together. Then, on April 10th, 2021, Kristin’s birthday, about 8 months after that elevator meeting, we strolled out to our spot on the coast of Lake Michigan and Ryan got down on one knee. She said “yes”, and it was official! We are so happy to share our lives with such wonderful family and friends, and we can’t wait to celebrate with you on September 2 of 2022!
