The year was 2019. The place, Wern Valley Sportsman's Club in Waukesha, Wisconsin. It was the annual Great Cancer Shootout where we volunteered to help raise money for cancer research. It was early in the day and it was about to be hot as hell. Not only was the mercury likely to top 95, I was also going to propose to my long-time girlfriend. Little did she know, I had been planning this for weeks and I was able to persuade a few friends and family members to meet us throughout the day. Like most proposals, this one started at the club house where we gathered our guns and ammunition. I had brewed up a scheme to get her just where I wanted her, when I wanted her...the bass pond before it got too hot & steamy to fish. There was a rumor that there was a 50" muskie was swimming around in that pond and (knowing me) I couldn't pass that up. My cousin Mike, his wife Jen, our friend Heather & her daughter, Becca, were all along for the ride. We whipped right around the end of the club house's driveway and headed as fast as the golf cart could take 4 Wisconsinites; Mike and Jen following behind in their new Jeep. As we putted around the property, I decided it was a good idea to take the cart through a tight clearing in the trees and down a steep hill with a sharp left turn onto a gravel road...Who doesn't like a little action to start their day? We may or may not have almost flipped the cart as we surged around the bend. Mike, likely to be cursing out loud as he and Jen continued to follow close behind. Alas! We had (barely) made it alive to the prop zone. My friends and family stayed back as they had been voluntold to be my camera crew for the day. As I approached the tranquil pond under the old willow tree, it appeared in all of it's American glory.
